Our second month was largely spent in Guatemala, with four days in Belize. We made the decision to leave Belize earlier than planned as it was simply proving too costly. The sea-change after stepping off the boat in Guatemala was marked, with excellent accommodation, a couple meals out and a few beers still leaving us with change out of the daily budget.

When in Guatemala, Tikal is definitely a must-see and this was our largest expense. There are few options for visiting it cheaply but some savings can be made if you shop around the numerous tour groups.

A fantastic budget discovery for us in Guatemala was 'desayuno tipico'.  This breakfast is served all over the country, with the median price being 25 GTQ / £1.9  per person, but we found the cheapest (and actually best) version for 15 GTQ / £1.15 per person (including your coffee). Upper-end or more tourist-focussed restaurants will often mark-up the price on this dish quite significantly (38-45 GTQ/ £2.9 - 3.5), so those on a budget should take time to find the more economical establishments.
