It’s a great place to forget the rest of the world.

Out here there’s nothing but the sea, the winds, and the sense that life doesn’t get a whole lot sweeter.
— Captain Cliff

We think Captain cliff has a point.

But it does come at a cost. With a currency linked to the US dollar, prices across the country are artificially high meaning that a budget backpacker does have to be a little more savvy to enjoy all Belize has to offer. However, if you can loosen the purse strings a tad and go with the flow, a couple of weeks here eating fresh seafood, snorkelling in crystal blue waters and hanging out in a hammock will be more than worth it.

In a region of the world dominated by Latino culture, Belize couldn't feel more different, with the Kriol language, music and lifestyle permeating almost every experience. it is sometimes difficult to remember you have only one foot in the Caribbean.

so, you're thinking of going to belize?

For most people entering Belize from Mexico, Caye Caulker is the first port of call - and we can't blame them. Whilst this tiny little island has seen massive development in the last few years, the island's motto 'Go Slow' is still clear to all. If you have a little more time however, be sure to make a stop in Sarteneja along the way!

Still in the mood for clear water and basking on the beach? Hopkins and Placencia further south have the Caribbean vibe covered, especially for those interested in diving.

Those heading inland will be rewarded with the ATM caves, Mayan ruins and some spectacular nature in Cayo.

But, if you're making your way to the boat to Guatemala, you're sure to pass through Punta Gorda - so soak in the culture, have your last coconut rum and start practising your Spanish!

We've written more than a couple of articles about Belize, and hopefully they will help you find some information & inspiration for your own adventure.

I remind myself of what I’ve been told dozens of times since I got here: ‘you just gotta Belize it’.

our hidden gem

Every country has them, those secret little towns, beaches or pokey little cafés that no-one seems to have found yet - or at least written much about.

For us, it was this place. So, go ahead and take a look, but just try and keep it between us, at least for a little while....
