Cielo Rojo, Oaxaca City | Hostel Review

Please note that this review of Cielo Rojo is from our first trip to Oaxaca way back in 2014 and so prices etc are no longer correct, and significant changes are likely to have happened.

Our opinions may well be out of date, but we do note that this accommodation remains extremely highly rated and loved by travellers.

Vibe | A fresh and modern building, this is a well-designed youth hostel. Those looking for a party are likely to find it here.

Location | Four blocks away from Zocola, on a quiet street and around a 10-15 minute walk to St. Domingo, Cielo Rojo is ideally located for tourist attractions, restaurants, shops and bars, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle.

Best Thing | Large bathrooms with very powerful hot showers. The breakfast is also very nice with fresh filter coffee, cereal, yoghurt, toast and lots of fruit.

Worst Thing | During our stay, there were quite a few large groups staying making the place feel a little overrun. Some of the doubles also faced the social area, so those looking for a more sedate environment may prefer elsewhere.

Value for Money | A popular economical option in Oaxaca. There are definitely cheaper and better private doubles available in the town, but a few nights in the dorm with breakfast included make Cielo Rojo a perfectly good option for those on a budget.

We paid $140 per person, 8-bed mixed dorm with shared bathroom, 9th-10th August 2014

Recommended For | Young, social backpackers.

Top Tip | Supermarkets are oddly lacking in Oaxaca, but your best option is a 10-minute walk to the one on the corner of Av. Benito Juarez and Dr. Licega, facing the park.

Amenities | Kitchen, wi-fi, hot showers, breakfast included, tourist information, 24-hour security, lockers, social area, English and Spanish spoken.

Rating | 7
