hostel review: hostel candelaria, valladolid

Vibe: As with Valladolid, your pace slows right down in Candelaria. A stay of more than a few days to recuperate, relax or plan your next few weeks is essential.

Location: Perfect. Set in a public square round 5 minutes walk from the bus station (and Chichen Itza collectivos).

Best thing: This hostel really is one of the best we've stayed in, not just in Mexico, but across the world. It feels like home, where you can be as private or social as you wish. The colourful and quirky outdoor kitchen is a dream to cook in.

Worst thing: Very little, apart from there are some voracious mozzies around.

Value for money: For a private room, unbeatable. If you are in the slightly cramped 14-bed dorm, you won't complain but it could be a little better.

Recommended for: We dare anyone to not love this place. 

Top tip: Use and enjoy Valladolid as your base to reach Chitchen Itza. Make sure to get a collectivo or second-class bus ($25 per person) early in the morning to beat the large tour buses.

Amenities: Wifi, hot showers, plentiful tourist information, bike rental, free breakfast, garden and hammock area, excellent kitchen.
