hostel review: lydia's guesthouse, placencia

Private room for two, shared bathroom $55 BZD/night, 17th-20th April 2014

Vibe: Placencia is at heart a relaxed beach town, and Lydia's reflects this. Attracting a varied crowd, from budget backpackers and ex-pats to Belizean locals on a weekend getaway.

Location: Set a couple of houses back from the ocean, and a 10 minutes walk from the centre of the town, the guesthouse is close enough to the bars and restaurants, whilst retaining the peaceful atmosphere Lydia works hard to maintain.

Best thing: The main guesthouse was rebuilt two years ago and the rooms continue to feel clean and functional. The bathrooms in particular are fresh, spacious and modern.

Worst thing: The internet is painfully slow, so an upgraded connection may be required. The kitchen closing at 8.30 p.m can be a little inconvenient.

Value for money: Hotel-like conditions for hostel prices. In other words, excellent.

Recommended for: A broad range of travellers rest their head at Lydia's. The peaceful balconies are great for day-time reflection or night-time socialising.

Top tip: For those on a strict budget, make use of the washing line and catch up on your laundry. Lydia is more than happy to lend you a bowl!
