hostel review: hotel yax'ha, flores

Private double w/ bathroom, $100 GTQ night, 28th April – 8th April 2014

Vibe

Whilst we were there, Hotel Yax'ha was undergoing some refurbishment in time for the World Cup. Over the next few months, Yax'ha may be creating a newer, clearer identity.

Location

Given that you can navigate the perimeter of Flores in less than 20 minutes, it is difficult to be anything other than central.

Best thing

Very friendly staff, the rooms are large and it's next door to some of the cheapest beers and food in Guatemala. The wi-fi is also very reliable.

Worst thing

The cleaning of the rooms could be a bit more frequent.

Value for money

If staying for more than a week, Pat will give you a very good deal. We tried to negotiate a deal with a number hotels on the island, and few offered as good a deal. This is further evidenced by the number of other 'long-termers' staying there.

Recommended for

If you are only in Flores for a couple of days and looking to meet other travellers, then Hotel Yax'ha may not be for you. If, however, you are looking for a quiet and private place to bunker down for a little longer, this may well be perfect.

Top tip

The hotel's own restaurant downstairs is a little overpriced, so head next door or across the road for better deals. However, language learners may also be interested in the language school linked to the hotel.
