Posada El Telefono, Chichicastenango | Hostel Review

Please be aware that this review of Posada El Telefono is not from a recent trip, and so prices etc are no longer correct, and significant changes are likely to have happened.

Our opinions may well be out of date, but the guest house appears to still be open and we do note that this accommodation is still recommended as a secure, decent and economical place to stay by travellers who have visited recently.

Vibe | This quiet hotel housed in an old call centre is a family affair. Although the lack of large social areas means you are unlikely to meet many other backpackers, this quiet, well-run hotel is an excellent place to lay your head before or after a day spent at the market.

Location | Situated a couple of minutes walk from the centre of town, behind the El Calvario Cathedral, down a steep hill that certainly provides a work-out on the way back up! Two minutes walk from the market.

Best Thing | The small terrace perched at the top of the building affords amazing views of the surrounding area and particularly of the colourful cemetery. It is also an ideal place to enjoy the last of the days sun with a cold beer.

Worst Thing | There was only one functioning shower at the time of our stay, which meant quite a wait in the morning. If the hotel was full, as we can certainly imagine it would be at busier times of the year, this could become quite the nightmare.

Value for Money | The cheapest place we stayed in Guatemala. Although there was no kitchen, at this price even having to eat out for meals didn't stretch our budget.

60Q per night, private double with shared bathroom, 18th - 20th June 2014

Recommended For | This is undoubtedly the cheapest place to stay in Chichi, and for those looking to get an early start to the famous market, we would strongly recommend that this be everyone's first choice.

Top Tip | Request a room on the top floor for exceptional views. They are also considerably brighter than the lower levels.

Amenities | Terrace, in-room TVs available on request, small shop.

Rating | 6.5 (although lacking in amenities, the rooms are more than adequate for the price)
