Hostel Allende, Morelia | Hostel Review

$300 per night in a double with private bathroom, 6th-9th August 2014

Vibe

Allende is a large, well-run hostel catering for pretty much anyone – we encountered separated fathers, crazy middle-aged mothering figures, young Mexicans on dirty weekends and a number of students. They have well over thirty rooms, and but was surprisingly empty most of the time meaning a lovely quiet space. However, the open garden spaces would be ideal for more social travellers.

Location

About a 20 minute taxi-ride from the bus station, at the beginning of the historical centre.

Best thing

The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. On our last day we had a overnight bus, and although we checked-out at 12pm that afternoon, we allowed to remain in the hostel with full use of the facilities until 9 pm, free of charge.

And then there was Julio. Julio is a kitten that wandered in off the street a couple of months ago and is now a valued member of staff. Although a little rambunctious, there really is nothing nicer than having a cute kitty snuggle up on your lap and take a nap.

Worst thing

The budget doubles are pretty cramped, with perhaps even not enough room to swing Julio. Although we didn't mind too much, given the price of the room, if we were staying for more than a couple of nights, it would likely have gotten to us.

Value for money

The inclusion of a free breakfast is always a nice bonus, and means that you can save a few pesos on groceries. Whilst the rooms are little small, they are pretty good value given that you also have an en-suite bathroom.

Recommended for

As mentioned above, this hostel will suit everybody, age and budget.

Top tip

If you haven't booked ahead, take note that when you arrive the only advertised rooms are at least $450 pesos plus. They do have budget rooms, you just have to ask.

Amenities

Kitchen, free breakfast, wifi, hot showers, 24-hour security, social area, pets.
