Update | This post was fully updated in May 2022

When planning your own North Coast 500 itinerary, choosing the right places and locations to stay at along the way is an essential part of the planning process.

However, from personal experience, we know that choosing the right hotel, hostel, B&B, Airbnb, glampsite, or self-catering cottage involves a lot of work, wasted time and research, so we decided to help you out. Based on our own experiences and research, we carefully created and curated this North Coast 500 Accommodation guide to make everything a lot clearer and easier for you!

Whether you're driving a Lamborghini and looking for luxury, a family on a two week hill-walking holiday, a cheap B&B cyclist, a group of motorcyclists in search of Outlander moments, staycationing friends, in search of tranquil nature hideaways, or a couple on a romantic long weekend, each will find something to suit them in this list. Curated for you, by us, it includes our personal picks of the best accommodation options along key sections of route for various budgets and travel styles (including dog-friendly choices) - hopefully you will find something that's perfect for your own Scottish Highlands road trip!

April 2021 Update | As of the 26th April, The North Coast 500 is open.

There are new regulations and restrictions in place for tourism and daily life in Scotland due to the pandemic - we have discussed these and the road map’s key dates in more detail in our cornerstone article 23 Things To Know Before Driving the North Coast 500. However, it's important to note here that several accommodation options along the route have introduced a 2 or 3 night minimum stay due to enhanced cleaning requirements between stays.

As ever, it’s best to book well ahead.

NC500 Accommodation | The Essentials

Before we start to answer the question of ‘Where should I stay on the North Coast 500?’, it's really important to note a few quirks and realities about what North Coast 500 accommodation entails:

  • Bed & Breakfasts, and traditional family-run guesthouse are the most common type of accommodation. This usually involves a house having several private rooms (or often, just one) available for guests, and the homeowners live within the property too. This means they have a lovely homely charm to them, and offer up great opportunities to chat with locals (and get their incredibly useful insights and recommendations for the area!). Breakfast is usually included but there is no access to kitchen facilities to cook your own meals.

  • There are (thankfully) no large, generic hotel buildings along the route beyond Inverness. Some hotels may be rooms above pubs or restaurants, whilst others will be traditional hotels, but quite small-scale operations. There are however a number of wonderful hotels along the route in castles or 18th century listed buildings. If you're someone who prefers a hotel-type experience or service, you will have to factor this into your itinerary plans as you will have limited options in certain route sections. Our advice? Take the opportunity to stay in these hotels, but to also branch out into a guesthouse or self-catering cottage along the way.

  • There are a growing number of pods, cabins, and Shepherd Huts along the North Coast 500, and this is a brilliant thing. Cute and cosy, they are perfect for couples, offer a unique experience, and they are often located in stunning remote locations with the best views. We highly recommend staying at one or two along the way!

  • Some properties have a two-night minimum stay, whilst the challenges of summer 2020 have seen some extend this to a three-night minimum stay. If you're on the route for two weeks, this won't pose any issues, but you might find a place you love doesn't actually work for your itinerary if you're doing the North Coast 500 over five or seven days.

  • As you'll have your own car, take the opportunity to spend a night somewhere special in the middle of nowhere with sea views, the hills on your doorstep, or beach access out the front door - it's such a big part of the experience here. The majority (and the best) of the accommodation is not in the small towns of Wick and Thurso - it's in the idyllic and wild rural areas which the NC500 brings you to.

  • Everyone will be following a similar loop over four days to two weeks with several clearly defined accommodation 'hubs' along the way, and it's common for July slots fill up in January. Room occupancy rates increased by 26% from 2014 to 2018 and, although more North Coast 500 accommodation options pop up each year, demand often outstrips supply in the summer season. So, if you know your dates already, we strongly advise starting to look at booking accommodation sooner rather than later to improve your chances of getting a place that's suitable for your budget, your travel style, and your itinerary. Booking ahead is essential, especially if driving the North Coast 500 in the June-August summer season.

  • Yes, you can stay in several castles straight out of a fairytale!

  • Accommodation is going to be your main cost of doing this road trip, and prices are quite high in pockets of the route, and increased during the peak summer season from June - August. On average, a couple should expect to pay in the region of £80-100 per night across the route. It is possible to get this down to about £60 / night if you book early, focus on price instead of location & aesthetics, or are not bothered about staying anywhere particularly special on the route. If you're on a tight budget, it's just important to remember that you should try and treat yourself to somewhere memorable for at least one night of the trip! That extra £20 will be worth it (and we say this as two people who have done a lot of budget travel over the years and sometimes been a little too zealous on cheap over charming).

  • Many places to stay on the NC500 only allow you to check-in from 4 p.m. onwards.

  • Lots of places are dog-friendly, but quite a few are not. Hotels usually charge a set-fee per stay for the pooch (£10-25 is the range we’ve seen).Hotels and hosts also require you to let them know about your four-legged travel buddy when you’re making the booking online (just include it in the notes or drop them a message after you book).

Our North Coast 500 Accommodation Map

It can really be quite confusing getting your head around the NC500 route at first, and knowing which areas / regions you should stay at definitely adds to this.

The purpose of writing this post is to change that, save you time, and make sure you find the right accommodation for your travel style and budget.

So, based on our experiences of the road trip, we've structured everything according to ten colour-coded North Coast 500 accommodation 'hubs'. You can see these clearly defined along the route with different house colours representing each (you can zoom and click this map by the way, and click the little door symbol on the top left for an index).

Whether you're going to do the driving route for five days, ten days, or two weeks, you will pass through all of them. The travel times within the places grouped together in a single 'hub' are no more than 20 minutes or so (assuming no stops along the way!), and so you have the flexibility to cater your accommodation plans to your route (or vice-versa!). So, for example, if you find a cottage you absolutely love anywhere in the 'yellow hub’ of Gairloch, Poolewe & Aultbea or the ‘dark green hub’ of Scourie & Kylesku, just make that the place you end your driving at that day in the itinerary planning!

Anywhere we've included within any 'hub' is also sensible to use as a 'base' for slow travellers to discover the North Coast 500 and the surrounding areas i.e. if you'd prefer to stay somewhere for aa few nights and take the car out on day trips, or simply explore the local area's beaches and hillwalks, then simply stay there for 2+ nights.

To make things as clear and convenient as possible for you to find the perfect place for your travel style and budget, we have also split accommodation into the following categories for each region:

North Coast 500 Hotels

This includes amazing Scottish castle and small family-run operations, boutique luxury stays and traditional hotels.

Guesthouses and Bed & Breakfasts

Usually small, local and family-run affairs, there are also several stylish boutique B&Bs in this list. Most North Coast 500 bed & breakfasts are available to book on Airbnb, so don't be concerned if you click the link for a guesthouse and it brings you to Airbnb!

Airbnb & Self-Catering

There are about 600 options on Airbnb for the route, which includes those guesthouses above. However, where we're talking about an Airbnb or Self-Catering option in this post, we're referring to a property where you rent the entire place to yourself for a night or longer. This includes beautiful old cottages by the sea, tiny pods and shepherd huts, family-sized holiday homes or cute cabins for two, apartments or a house in a little village. The vast majority of these have cooking facilities for guests (from just a wee microwave to a fully-equipped kitchen).

Hostels

There are less than a dozen hostels along the route, so your options are limited in certain regions if you want to stay in dorm beds all along the way. We have included them in this post, but you can also find them all listed in our dedicated North Coast 500 Hostels article.

If you are looking at camping in the North Coast 500, then please check out our dedicated Campsite post here (published soon!).

Finally, in curating this list for you, the key selection criteria was that we would be happy to stay at every NC500 accommodation included in this article. Location, facilities, and overwhelmingly positive guest reviews were also factored in. There are however a dozen or so personal favourites; not just places that are luxury (though a a few are), but the ones that are so unique, stylish, excellent value or set in a stunning location, that they will make any person's North Coast 500 road trip experience that extra bit special. We’ve marked these with an ADR next to their name!

Where To Stay on The North Coast 500

Inverness (Dark Green Hub)

All roads of the NC500 lead to Inverness. This small river city, the capital of the Highlands, is the start and end point of the 516 miles route, so it makes sense to have a night here at the beginning or end of your stay.

If you're arriving early into the city from elsewhere in Scotland, and want to hit the road as soon as possible, then you could quite easily choose to stay at one or two excellent places 20-50 miles into the route.

Hotels

The Glenmoriston Townhouse Hotel | A stylish 4-star hotel right by the river, this is a classy, modern twist on the traditional Highland aesthetic. Single and double en-suite private rooms available from £119 / night, breakfast included. Check prices and availability here.

Heathmount Hotel | Judging this place from the outside would be a mistake! With colourful modern boutique rooms, comfy beds, and a popular bar/restaurant in the same buildings, it's a great option for couples. Guesthouses and Bed & Breakfasts

Applecross (Raspberry Hub)

Although you can go east from Inverness and travel north along the Black Isle (the count-clockwise way), we highly recommend your NC500 itinerary brings you to the west coast first (the clockwise way). This was the most beautiful driving route along many single track roads, was home to beautiful beaches and postcard Highland scenery and, quite simply, the way we could always go when doing this road trip for the first time.

Applecross, a little coastal hamlet at the end of the infamous winding road of the Balaceaech Na Ba anad 81 miles from Inverness, marks a sensible and beautiful first stop. The only problem is that it has limited accommodation options, so it may sometimes be necessary for you to choose somewhere further along the route or stay at foot of the the mountain pass and leave your ascent for the following morning!

Guesthouses and Bed & Breakfasts

Applecross Inn | The popular pub and restaurant has seven pleasant en-suite rooms, with a full Highlands breakfast included. Check availability and prices here.

Clachan Manse B&B | This is a lovely family-run B&B with the perfect views and hospitality for your first night in the Highlands. Staying in The Thistle Room is recommended. Check availability and prices here.

Apartments & Self-Catering

No16 Shore St. | A lovingly restored seaside cottage, it sleeps up to four guests across two bedrooms - check prices and availability here.

Spindrift Bed and Breakfast | A little further on from Applecross, this B&B provides you with your own modern studio apartment within a large, modern house in a stunning isolated location by the sea. Light breakfast included. Check availability and prices here.

A special mention goes out Eagle Rock Eco Lodge. Designed by a well-known architect this vast space is perfect to host retreats and large family getaways. There is a minimum 6-night stay so will not suit most taking on the route - but we wanted to give it a mention anyway!

Hostels

Hartfield House | Once a hunting lodge, Hartfield House now offers comfortable rooms to families, couple and groups of friends, with options for private and dormitory style facilities. With a great guest kitchen, and set in beautiful grounds, this white house among the trees is a great place for people of all budgets. Click here to check availability and make a reservation.

Sanachan Bunkhouse | If you want to save the mountain drive for the following day, then there are some options in Ardarroch or by Loch Kishorn. This shared accommodation Bunkhouse is a cheap, sociable option for travellers. Find out more here.

Shieldaig & Torridon (Orange Hub)

A beautiful 30 mile winding coastal drive from Applecross, both Shieldaig and Torridon are wonderful destinations for a standalone Highlands holiday. If Applecross is full and you’ve left Inverness early, you could push onto these two for your first night (though that would be a few too many miles and hours for us), or use them as your next base if you’ve got 1-2 weeks on the road here and want to explore this particularly gorgeous area further.

We might as well mention here that you should not underestimate the Highland Mile, and a mile on the North Coast 500 is not the same as one on the M25 in terms of driving time and conditions. So, when you see 30 miles, don’t think that’s just a 45-minute drive (and you will one stopping off along the way too). For more advice to help you plan and prepare, have a read of 23 Things To Know Before Driving The North Coast 500 later.

Thurso & John O’Groats (Light Blue Hub)

John O’Groats, mainland Britain’s most northerly settlement, is very famous. For endurance cyclists, runners, motorcyclists, travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats (known as the LEJOG or JOGLE route) , and therefore from one end of the UK to the other, is a mark of pride. In recent years, supported by the North Coast 500 bringing in a more diverse clientele and with people arriving to take the ferry to Orkney, John O’Groats has become somewhere to spend a night not just because your legs are shattered!

The small town of Thurso, 19.5 miles to the west, has a bunch of accommodation options. However, we feel the best are in and around Thurso and in John O’Groats, rather than in the town itself, so have included nearby Melvich, Castletown, and Dunnet.

If you’re really struggling for availability or budget, then do also check out the town.

Wick, Brora, Helmsdale, Dornoch & Tain (Dark Blue Hub)

After John O'Groats, the sweeping eastern coast section of the North Coast 500 sees a return to more standard road conditions, where you can eat up the 116.6 miles from Wick to Inverness pretty quickly. It also brings a choice with it: continue onward to Inverness in a single day, or choose to slow down and stay for a night or two somewhere along the way.

With a the the majority of the route’s stunning castle hotels (we've been lucky enough to stay at a couple), one of the finest whisky selections in Scotland, two world-famous distilleries, and a handful of historic coastal villages (including the prettiest one in the Highlands), and some of the best accommodation on the North Coast 500 route, there's an abundance of incentive to not rush back.
