hostel review: m&n hotel, caye caulker

Private apartment with ensuite and full kitchen, $400 BZD per week, 7th-13th April 2014

Vibe: Strong ex-pat community, with a number of Canadians escaping the winter. Quiet and safe.

Location: One street back from the beach and a few minutes walk from the ferry dock. Close to all Caye Caulker's bars and restaurants.

Best thing: Having your own well-equipped kitchen is a welcome break from multiple backpackers fighting over a couple of gas hobs. Better still, having your own fridge means cold beers on-tap!

Worst thing: The set up made it difficult to meet other travellers. If you were travelling on your own, you could feel a little isolated staying here.

Value for money: If staying for more than a week, a great deal can be had – the cabana we stayed in should have been $90 BZD/night but weekly rate worked out at approx. $60, reducing to $30 if staying a month.

Recommended for: Couples on a budget who have been travelling for a while, are planning on staying on the island for at least a week or those wanting that extra bit of privacy at a reasonable cost.

Top tip: Book ahead as this place tends to fill up fast. Also, the wi-fi password will be keyed into your device by a member of staff.

Rating: 7 (for a long term stay).
